Class 2 Book Fortnight

Class 2 Rubies have really enjoyed our learning during our Book Fortnight. We read the poem ‘The Spider and the Fly’ by Mary Howitt.

As we read the poem, we talked about whether the fly should trust the spider and what we should do. This helped us to talk about trust, who we should and should not trust and also think about consent and how it is OK to say no.

We also read other stories with spiders in, including ‘Argh! Spider!’ by Lydia Monks and ‘The Very Busy Spider’ by Eric Carle. This led us to learn about spiders, including what they look like, how they behave and their life cycle.

The children worked hard in their writing books to sound out and write descriptive sentences about the spider from the book. They used their phonic knowledge really well to identify what sounds they could here and what letters to write.

We also completed lots of spider-inspired pieces of artwork, including glue and glitter webs, where the children painted a web using PVA glue and then used glitter to make it sparkle like the morning dew on a web in winter. The children also cut out and folded paper to make spiders with concertina legs. Finally, they worked really hard to weave the string around the lolly sticks to make a web of their own!
